This drawing for the Philadelphia based design firm Mona Ross Berman Interiors depicts a white painted wardrobe with mirrored doors, a large pullout with a clothes rod, plenty of shelves, drawers, and a vanity desk. The woodwork will be on furniture style feet with recessed toekicks. The piece is located at the top of a flight of stairs, across from the banister, near the master bedroom and bath.
Projects undergo a transformation as they go through the design stage. This second rendering (above) of a king sized bed with six drawers is more in keeping with the client’s affinity to objects with provenance and patina. Dust and allergens in the room will be kept to a minimum with no bunnies able to hide under the bed, while the drawers promise plenty of space to stash and organize shoes or clothes. The edges will all be kept rounded so there will be less shin bruising than occurs around some sharp-cornered platform beds. The first version of the bed (below) looks entirely different, with exposed joinery and carved raw boards at the head and foot.
One of our current jobs is a space saving bedroom set – starring a built-in Murphy bed and bookcase paired with a dresser and matching mirror. We’ll be making some Maple stain samples to send to the client for comparing with her paint choices. These pieces should be installed in Manhattan this March or April.

Detailed views of a custom made full size walnut four post bed constructed with an arched headboard. Made by hand by a Pennsylvania cabinetmaker of local materials, the posts are traditional octagonal tapers topped with finials.
This poster bed, constructed of hand selected Pennsylvania walnut, features a live edge slab as the headboard. The rough edges have been chiseled and sanded away, but the natural contours of the tree’s exterior remain. It is truly one of a kind and celebrates the essence of the tree. The posts on this one are octagonally tapered, like a pencil. When it is finished it will have canopy rails and finials at the top. This piece was commissioned by a client in Pottsville, PA.
This four poster bed was made for a client’s penthouse in Manhattan. It was built for a king sized mattress and the client desired a more modern design than our traditional pencil post bed (we’ve built eight of them thus far). We found inspiration in this design, although our price was a good deal lower than the retail on the “Armande” by Interieurs (NYC).

This panels on the front of this solid walnut murphy bed were designed to echo the style of a tansu cabinet in the collection if the homeowner. The bed stays securely locked in the upright position until the correct parts are flipped up (see bottom right photo), and then the pistons allow the bed to lower for use. This kind of a built-in bed is a great option for a guest bedroom that doubles as an office, studio, or playroom. It is so much nicer than a sofa bed!
