White Philadelphia Wardrobe

What an elegant piece this white wardrobe has turned out to be! On the far left there is a hanging pullout for short dresses. The center section is comprised of shelves and drawers, and on the right there’s a vanity desk with a rich stained countertop and special storage for a hair dryer to stay plugged in, yet out of sight. The entire piece sits on furniture feet and the toe kick is recessed to reinforce the furniture look. The mirrors make the piece quite dramatic.

These are some shots of an installation in progress (in April), of a large built-in buffet and bookcase in a historic home in Philadelphia. The buffet (in the top two photos) which recessed into an existing alcove, had integral lighting and a Carrara marble top with an ogee profile. The large wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling bookshelf (lower shots) had integral vents for the home’s ductwork, fluted columns, raised panels, and solid, beefy shelves (not shown). The units were painted in place.

Ready to Go

The lacquered Maple Bookcase and Entertainment Unit built-ins are just about complete and ready to go to their new home in Maryland. The homeowners chose solid brass knobs and bin pulls in antique nickel from Lee Valley. These pieces promise to make a dramatic upgrade to the room they will grace.

Meanwhile, two built-ins are being created for a home in Philadelphia. They will be delivered next week and painted on site.

The built-in bookcase and entertainment unit are coming along. In the top photos, you can see the drawings on the old schoolhouse chalkboard for the two cabinets this job entails. The first two versions of the design for this project can be seen here and here. In the third shot, the plywood boxes have been put together. In the last shot, Maple face frames are in the process of going on. The substantial shelves are fixed for a balanced symmetrical look as well as superior strength.

Testimonials

"Adam delivered the dresser this afternoon and it is beautiful!  Angela loves it and keeps going upstairs to look at it.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“Adam Karr, of Springhouse Woodshop, Benton, did the spacious, detail-oriented kitchen in Brian and Ellen Slovinski’s  new-old dwelling. The kitchen is the heart of this home, as well as the ultimate showpiece.

The Slovinskis are tall, so they made the countertops 38 inches high, rather than the standard 36 inches. However a custom-made Hoosier, complete with built-in flour sifter, has a countertop at 36 inches with baking in mind, for better leverage when kneading dough, for instance.

Other through-out details include a paper towel holder built underneath an island sink, drawers for pots and pans directly underneath the stovetop, a corner drawer that cleverly pulls straight out at an angle and a pantry door with a chalk board surface, convenient to keep lists of things needed.

The couple credits Karr with a built-in nook in the entryway that showcases a bench, hooks for coats, an area under the bench for shoes, and side shelves to hold keys, mail, and gloves. He also built an exquisite linen closet on the second floor.

“The nice thing about custom-made furniture is that it is sold direct, so it eliminates the furniture store between the maker and the consumer and the huge mark-up. For quality, affordable, U.S.-made products, you can go with the craftsman”, Brian said. Ellen adds that she saw a bedroom set she liked in a furniture store but wanted it a little different. She showed Karr a picture of the furniture and asked if he could make it as she wanted; he said yes and came back with a price comparable to the piece she had found in the furniture store.   -  from the Times Leader, February 2, 2008, article by Dawn Zera
