In the Shop: Dual Wallbed Build

The woodshop has been bustling with the design and creation of two wallbeds, nearing completion. One is a full size bed, made from Maple, with custom wood pulls, and will be flanked by matching side cabinets that stretch from wall to wall. The second is crafted from Walnut, and will go to an apartment in Manhattan.

Each starts with a client consultation, a sketch, raw lumber, a cut list, and hours upon hours into weeks of craftsmanship. These images are from Adam’s Instagram stream @SpringhouseWoodshop – but if you aren’t a IG user, you can see all the progress photos at this link #WallbedBuild.

Our Queen Size Ash Wallbed is looking mighty sharp in our schoolhouse gallery in upstate Pennsylvania. This piece has paneled sides, matching crown molding, and is painted Wickham Gray on the inside. It is available for purchase and can be shipped nationwide.

Up next in the woodshop are two additional wallbeds- one Maple, one Walnut. Wallbeds are a useful addition to any home and can accomodate the mattress you already own, or any mattress up to 12″ thick.

Seven Dovetailed Drawers

The latest completed piece of furniture out of the Springhouse Woodshop is this gorgeous Gloss Black Campaign Dresser with a removable tray top.

Adam built one for a client near Seattle, and a second for our Furniture Studio. Featuring seven dovetailed drawers on soft close self closing slides housed in a dovetailed case on a dovetailed stand, she’s solid all around and certainly beautiful.

Slab Walnut Island Counter

Slab Walnut Counter

A kitchen rennovation in Bloomsburg, PA was capped off with a gorgeous slab Walnut counter on the island. After considering a butcher block versus a thick solid slab, the homeowners opted for the latter. This beautiful wood countertop started as two enormous 3″ thick boards from Alderfer Lumber. The client decided to embrace the lighter sapwood and live edge details that define the edge of the former tree. Isn’t Walnut beautiful?

After flattening and joining them together, Adam used four carefully placed dovetail keys to strenthen defects or knots in four areas and filled another knot hole with epoxy. At each end a perpendicular board crosses the long grain of the counter, joined with mortises and tenons and pegged so as to allow seasonal movement of the wood. The counter then was sanded, and sanded, and sanded before heavy coats of mineral oil were applied and allowed to soak in under plastic wrap. Finally, a custom beeswax/ coconut oil/ mineral oil top coat was rubbed on and buffed out for a completely food safe finish. Some people think wood counters are hard to care for, we disagree. Kid’s Room Cabinetry Upgrade

Custom white desk and closet built-in, NYC

Yesterday, these two custom bedroom built-ins were installed- and they made a welcome upgrade to a boy’s bedroom on the Upper West Side. The desk was built to match his sister’s, with a file drawer, pencil drawer, dimmable LED strip lighting, bookshelves and more.

The closet has a new central unit featuring an integral step up that doubles as a nook for organizing shoes. There are four sections for hanging clothes, twelve open adjustable cubbies, and four dovetailed drawers on soft close self closing undermount slides. All painted white with waterborne lacquer.

This morning we received a note from the client reading: “J. loves his desk and closet. Thanks!”

Manhattan TV cabinet

Bright and early this morning, this impressive floor to ceiling built-in bookcase and TV cabinet went on its way to Manhattan. Comissioned by Mona Ross Berman Interiors, with hardware by Restoration hardware and waterborne lacquer in Benjamin Moore White Dove, a 40″ Samsung TV will go in the center and three satin nickel lamps will be mounted below the crown molding.

Measuring 6′ 1″ wide and 9′ tall, the piece features beaded adjustable shelves and inset door openings that really dress the cabinet up. It will be scribed into the existing trim so that it looks as if it was always there.

Campaign Furniture for the Study

Three custom Mahogany pieces of campaign furniture are nearing completion for a Philadelphia client of architect Mark B. Thompson Associates.

Two filing cabinets- one lateral and one standard configuration as well as a side table with drawer have been stained to join some existing campaign furniture already in the room. Antique brass hardware completes the look. The drawer sides are rated at 200 lb capacity each to meet the demands of piles of papers.

Lumber for this project was selected at the nearby Mooretown Mill.
